Kamo Hunter caught a Striper in Eureka

Kamo Hunter with a striper
Kamo Hunter can't resist a good stripper, I mean striper.

Kamo Hunter cannot refuse an awesome stripper, i mean striper. This 6.2 pound Hydrid Striped Bass was caught at the Robert C. Byrd Locks and Dam on the Ohio River. Ole' KAMo caught it accidentally while fishing for walleye and sauger. He was using a shiny white minnow jig and WHAM!!!! Darn near lost the pole and all. It was caught on 6 lb test and took about 5 minutes to land. KAMo has landed over 80 fish from the dam this year alone. This fishin is getting good.

Big Channel Catfish caught in Shenango Dam

Channel Catfish
Super big channel catfish caught in the Shenango Dam Resevoir just above the dam itself. Some would argue that this is a Blue Catfish, but they'd be wrong.

Many people would argue that this super nice catfish is a Blue Catfish, but they'd be super wrong. This large cat is a Channel Catfish. He was caught just before daybreak above the Shenango Dam in Sharpsville, PA. It was caught using chicken liver and a circle hook laying on the bottom. Identification of this fish as a channel catfish vs a blue catfish was a little difficult. Basically, it's all about the anal fin being rounded on a channel cat and flat-edged on a blue. Channel Cats at this stage of maturity will have a dark blue to gray slate color on the topside and most of the tail with a lighter belly. Blue Cat's have a much bluer color to them overall. This big guy was roughly 31 inches long and weighed between 12 and 14 pounds.

kamohunter landed this nice steelhead

caught with a fly rod on Walnut Creek just above the Manchester Pool

Kamohunter from Mount'n Memories Taxidermy took a trip to Lake Erie to try his hand at some super awesome Steelhead Trout action. He landed this bad boy just above the Manchester Pool on Walnut Creek in October 2009.

Steelhead trout

caught on Walnut Creek October 2009

24 inches, a little over 6lb Steelhead trout from Walnut Creek, Erie, PA while fishing in the Manchester pool. Caught using a live minnow about two feet down from a small slip float. Not a huge Steelhead, but an average specimen. Took a 4-day trip to Lake Erie with the sole intentions of hitting limit each day. Unfortunately, that didn't happen but we did manage to tackle a couple, oh well, we'll get more next trip.

Hawk in Southern Ohio identification

anyone know what kind of hawk this is?
This hawk was seen in my backyard in Southern Ohio, maybe he'll eat the mole that is tearing up my backyard.

Can someone please correctly identify this awesome looking hawk for me? I have seen it all summer long but this is the first time I've been able to catch it with my camera. I am hoping that he is going to eat the mole that is tearing up my backyard. If you know what type of hawk this is, please leave feedback or contact me at theboss@hillbillyhut.com

Now that's a nice grill

This grill is nothing short of awesome. It features a Gas Grill, Charcoal Grill and a Smoker. All in one. This combo grill is going to be used constantly. It has room to cook over 60 hamburgers at a time!

Smoked Sirloin Roast

4lb Smoked Sirloin Roast

I picked up a 4 pound sirloin roast from my local grocery store to put on my smoker. I have read many articles where people tried to slow-cook a sirloin and failed. Many stated that it was over cooked and tough, but I was able to achieve success on my first go at it. Typically, sirloin is too lean to slow-cook or smoke and becomes dry and tough, just like sirloin steaks do if they are overcooked.

The night before cooking, I unpacked the big four pound sirloin roast and rubbed it down with some fresh cracked peppercorn and sea salt. I believe that the sea salt helped to cure the outer crust of the roast and allowed it to hold the majority of the flavor and juice. I started my smoker around 10:30am, it is an offset smoker (you can check it out by clicking here). Using regular old Kingsford charcoal to start with, I think it's a good way to get some heat built up. When the black is gone from the briquettes I added some Jack Daniels charcoal, which contains wood from actual barrells, and then some Jack Daniels smoking blocks around the perimeter of the pit. Some people say to wrap the roast in aluminum foil, but I chose not to do this since it wouldn't have soaked up the good smoke flavor. Once my smoker cooled back down to 200 degrees F, I took the roast (along with some baking potatoes wrapped in foil) and placed them in the smoker. This happened around 11:30am. Throughout the process I added some smaller, aged and dried cherry twigs directly on the hot coals and closed the ventilation on the bottom of the smoke pit. This created an ample amount of flavorful smoke that soaked in really nicely to the roast. You will want to avoid opening the smoker during the cooking process, as you are only dealing with around 200 or 300 degrees of heat, plus you'll just end up losing the smoke flavor.

I was able to keep the temperature between 200 and 250 degrees throughout the entire cooking process by adding small bits of wood to the pit. Airflow is also important and you want to make sure you are trying different things, like adjusting the upper and lower flu's, or vents. Your wood will typically burn hotter and faster with full ventilation and will generate much less smoke. The opposite is true as well, but by closing off the ventilation completely you stand a good chance of putting your fire out or reducing the temperature to an undesirable level.

I kept the lid closed on my sirloin roast and removed it around 3:30pm, so all in all about 4 hours of cook time. I was a little scared to bring it in and slice it, but I could tell after the first cut that it was nothing short of a perfectly smoked slab of meat. About an inch in all around the outside was bright red and the center was extremely juicy and overall had an incredible flavor. No other seasonings or sauces were needed. I sliced a few thicker slices, about 1/4 inch, and then cut about 3/4 of the roast in an very thin, almost transparent manner for sandwiches (I might add some good barbecue sauce to them!). To slice it I used my Rapala electric filet knife, I know, I know, it's made for filetting fishes but it worked extremely well for beef as well.

I spent about twelve bucks on my sirloin roast and will probably eat it for a week and be much more satisfied than eating twelve dollars worth of fast food burgers, which would only be about 2 days worth of eating.

Jesse Nettinger with a nice Rainbow Trout

Neshannock Creek, Rainbow Trout
Jesse N caught this nice rainbow trout Father's Day 2007 while fishing with his Dad and Brother

Jesse Nettinger is capable of catching many fish. This one is a sampling of the small pile of Rainbow Trout from Neshannock Creek in or around New Castle PA. Jesse caught this on a light action rod casting a hook and redworm into the rapids and letting it drift. Within about thirty seconds, he was reel'n in the catch!

Rainbow Trout, Neshannock Creek, in or around New Castle, PA

Rainbow trout in Neshannock Creek
Rainbow Trout - early summer catch, Neshannock Creek in New Castle PA

Ahhh... these smaller size Rainbows can be caught one after another in Neshannock Creek in or around New Castle, Pennsylvania. They are most easily caught by standing on the stream bank and using a really small hook and extremely light split shot or no sinker at all. Little red worms cast into the faster moving water will be your best bet to produce the most Rainbow Trout. Simply cast the worm out there and let the current take him for a ride and BAMM!!! You'll be pullin'em in left and right.

Hooked - Jesse Nettinger

Jesse Nettinger is hooked by his Dad - the beer had nothing to do with this incident
Jesse was not injured on this play.

During a fishing trip around Father's day in 2007, while fishing for Striped Bass in Pymatuming Resevoir, Dad literally caught a Jesse Nettinger. He was caught using a 12oz Beer in a Lowe's Motor Speedway can coozy and a blue and silver 5 inch minnow lure. Jesse did not sustain any injuries during this incident. This was truly a great fishing incident caught on camera.

May 31, 1985 Tornado outbreak occurred in Ohio and Pennsylvania

May 31, 1985 a tornado outbreak occurred in Ohio and Pennsylvania that was one of the worst outbreaks in history. Some website speculate 12th worst and other say 13th worst. I was there and remember it as if it were yesterday with extremely vivid memories. If you have any pictures or stories before, during or after the storm I would really like the opportunity to get a copy for a future post on this website. Sharpnose Shark

Sharpnose Shark caught in the intercoastal waterway Hilton Head Island, SC. We were really on a party barge trying to get in the way of some moving Cobia, but all we caught were a bunch of sharks, still a really cool trip all in all for the price.

468x60 High-tech Chip In New Lure

Channel Catfish from the Ohio River

Caught this nice catfish using chicken liver for bait and a circle hook

This nice size channel catfish was caught directly in the churning tailwater of the Robert C Byrd Lock and Dam south of Gallipolis Ohio on the Ohio River. Chicken Liver was used for bait, a heavy 4oz pyramid lead sinker, and a good size circle hook. Unbelievably, this was banked in July during a hot afternoon. Normally, not my favorite time to fish, but I've found the best time to fish is whenever you get a chance to do it.

Maker's Mark making great music!

This bottle should last a while!

That is one big pile of CRAPPIE

Cheat Lake is one of the premier fisheries in the state of WV. It is up and coming quickly and is a wonderful crappie fishery. This fish was 14 1/2 in. and 1.38 lbs, which just barely misses citation size by WV's standards. Yes i was very mad!

42 in. Longnose Gar

This guy gave me more than i bargained for. he managed to burry a tooth under the cuticle of my thumb and it stayed swollen for about two weeks until the tooth worked its way out. It came from a bow fishing trip from the lower Kanawha river in WV.

The elusive tiger...... Trout that is!

This is a tiger trout that came from a small fly fishing only stream in PA. What a great trout stocking program they have up there. Nothing like a good ole prince nymph to fool a trout. Guess that makes me a NYMPHo!

The rainbow of the Ocean

I dont think anyone will agrue that this is one of the most beautiful animals in the ocean. Their colors and grace when they jump is awe inspiring. This is Kris and His good buddy Nick. Who says a couple of WV boys can't tame the deep blue sea!

The Donkey of the sea!

This is the great amberjack. it was caught off the caost of the outter banks in NC. This is easily the hardest fighting fish i have ever got my hands on. no wonder they call them Sea donkey's!

The wiley coyote has been tamed

This ole boy came from the Crown City Wildlife Management Area. he was taken out with a .22!

Nice Buck spotted in or around Point Pleasant WV

Photo captured by Kris' automated rig

This big ole boy was the first deer to walk by my trail camera for the '09 season. It only about 150 yeards from the house. Several guesses have this boy scoring in the 130-140 range.

Channel Catfish - Ohio River
Tom's caught this fat Cat

Tom reeled in this fat Flathead catfish about 1/4 mile south of the Robert C Byrd Lock and Dam on the Ohio River during an overnight catfishing trip in the Summer of 2008. I can't remember what he was using for bait, but I think it was chicken liver or night crawler.

My brothers Chinook Salmon

Chinook Salmon
Look at the size of this beast! This dude has caught some monsters in his lifetime, but this one is my favorite. Wish I could have been there for that one bro.

You know this dude was stoked when he banked this bad boy super huge Chinook Salmon in Washington State, I want to say it was in the Columbia River. I am sure he'll tell me if I am wrong and I'll have to repost this. I am not sure exactly what he was using for bait?

Dads Channel Catfish

Steelers fan catches channel catfish on the Ohio River
News Release - July 2008, a Steelers fan catches a channel catfish while fishing at night on the Ohio River.

Here is a picture of my Dad, who also happens to be a Steelers fan, catching a decent channel catfish in July 2008. This was on the banks of the Ohio River in the Greenup Pool closest to Gallipolis, OH, just down from the Robert C Byrd Lock and Dam. I think he was using either a chicken liver or a nightcrawler on an octopus hook

a little Saugeye action

Again, caught in the Ohio River on a nightcrawler while trying to catch some catfish. The teeth on this saugeye are nothing short of amazing!

Little Striper Caught in the Ohio River

Baby Striper caught on the Ohio River using chicken liver
Using chicken liver proves to work on more than one species... so you never know when you'll reel in a Striper when fishing for Channel Catfish

This tiny Striper was caught in the Ohio River using chicken liver. Of course, I wasn't really trying to catch him, I was fishing for catfish.
